The main objective of the initiative is to reduce the burden of patients with chronic hepatitis B & C and HIV infection living in correctional facilities, with the ultimate goal of the long-term elimination of these diseases within these specific populations. This action promotes equal access to healthcare services and strengthens public health, both within correctional facilities and in the general population.


A total of 17 visits and interventions have been carried out in correctional facilities across the country. Specifically, examinations were conducted in the following Correctional Facilities:
Nigrita Correctional Facility, Thessaloniki Correctional Facility, Kassandra Correctional Facility, Domokos Correctional Facility, Trikala Correctional Facility, Chania Correctional Facility, Larissa Correctional Facility, Alikarnassos Correctional Facility, Chios Correctional Facility, Nafplio Correctional Facility, Thebes Correctional Facility – KETHEA in action, Amfissa Correctional Facility.

Since the start of the initiative in the Correctional Facilities, from 2020 to the present, thousands of inmates have been reached and tested for hepatitis C, B, and HIV, with the following results:

A total of 7,857 inmates were reached, of whom 4,630 were tested for hepatitis C antibodies (anti-HCV), with 663 positive results. It is worth noting that 3,227 individuals declined to be tested. A total of 298 patients were recorded in the National HCV Registry, and 288 individuals began treatment. For hepatitis B (HBsAg), 890 individuals were tested, with 15 positive results. For HIV, 892 individuals were tested, and 16 positive cases were identified.
