Pillars of Action

Advocacy

Promitheas works to bridge the gap between the healthcare system and vulnerable populations. Through participation in institutional bodies, collaborations with civil society organizations, and networks of healthcare professionals, we systematically highlight health inequalities and promote evidence-based solutions grounded in the principles of equality.
In parallel, we collect both qualitative and quantitative data from our daily practice, which we utilize to strengthen public discourse and advocate for the inclusion of health issues on the national political agenda.

5 Legislative Changes

To date, Promitheas has contributed through advocacy to the following legislative changes:

  • Abolition of Restrictive Access Criteria for Hepatitis C Treatments. Based on new data, all individuals living with the virus are now eligible for treatment, regardless of the stage of liver damage.
  • Law on the Issuance of a Temporary Health Care Number for Prisoners (THCNP). Promitheas contributed to the relevant ministries passing legislation that allows both Greek and foreign prisoners who do not meet the criteria for obtaining a Social Security Number (AMKA) or a Temporary Foreign Insurance and Health Care Number (PAAUPA) to access health services without barriers.
  • Expansion of Naloxone Distribution. The ability to distribute naloxone, an opioid overdose antidote, has been broadened to public institutions and professionals working in the field, such as OKANA, KETHEA, PSNA, and PSNT.
  • Securing Access to Ursofulk Medication. Following intense advocacy towards the Ministry of Health’s health policy, we ensured that patients can smoothly access the medication Ursofulk.
  • Intervention via the Ombudsman Regarding the Unjust Dismissal of a Police Officer Due to Hepatitis B Diagnosis. Our intervention led to the police force reconsidering its criteria and reinstating the officer.
