Pop-Up Liver Hub
- Location 42–44 Favierou Street, Metaxourgeio
- Hours Every Wednesday, 11:00–18:00
The Pop-Up Liver Hub is a mobile public health intervention offering free prevention, diagnostic and linkage-to-treatment services for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV to migrants and refugees in Athens. It operates at the Promitheas Community Hub in Metaxourgeio.
HBsAg prevalence in the target population exceeds 7%, four times the rate in the general population, while more than 60% of cases remain undiagnosed. Many of these individuals reside legally in Greece but are not reached by routine screening due to language, socioeconomic and systemic barriers. The programme does not require an AMKA (Greek social security number) or documentation of legal residence.
The programme provides:
- Rapid testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis
- Liver elastography and specialist medical assessment
- Hepatitis B vaccination for susceptible individuals
- Prescriptions and further laboratory testing where indicated
- Psychosocial support and linkage to services within the Greek National Health System (ESY)
The targets for the first year of the pilot programme are 500+ screenings and linkage to treatment for at least 80% of individuals who test positive. The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Hepatology and Gastroenterology Unit, Second Department of Internal Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), at Hippokration General Hospital of Athens.
